Two new records of Ipomoea flowers in Goa

A avid wildlifer and trekker from Bhuipal-Sattari in his quest for wildflowers of Goa is successful in discovering two new records of Ipomoea flowers to the flora of Goa.

Ipomoea is the largest genus of convolvulaceae, one of the dominant families of Angiosperms. The research paper jointly written by Amrapali Kattee, Pramod Lawand, Chandrahas Patil and Vinod Shimpale, researchers in the field of Botany has scientifically described these two new species of plants from Goa.

These two taxa were not earlier recorded from Goa. Suryakant Gaonkar who has authored a book on the wildflowers of Goa had came across Ipomoea aculeata flowers in Pali, Kumbharkhan and Morle of Sattari. Ipomoea deccana flowers he had found on the plateau of Padeli in Sattari. When he had found these flowers of Ipomoea, he brought it to the notice of the botanist Pramod Lawand who along with his colleagues from the field of Botany studied the specimen of flowers and described in Journal of Economic and Taxonomic Botany.

Species of Ipomoea deccana was found on the lateritic plateau of Padeli. However, on this plateau plots for new construction has been earmarked and some houses have been already built and this has posed threat to the survival of this plant and hence I have made attempt to grow it successfully in my home garden. Both these species plays role in enriching the ecology.

Ipomoea aculeata is a perennial climber grows along roadside and bear large white flowers. Ipomoea deccana too is a perennial climber with lobed leaves and small purple flowers particularly growing on plateau and mostly associated with grass. Both these new plants are habitat specific and restricted to lateritic plateaus of Goa and the Konkan region.
